Our Breeding Philosophy

Grounded in the wisdom of old-school poultrymen, our animal husbandry draws on a broad base.

Organic principles and an understanding of poultry genetics and evolutionary biology guide our practices.

As much as we breed to standard, and for egg colour, we prioritise health and vigour above all else.

We breed for disease resistance.

This approach allows us to raise the strongest possible chickens for ourselves, and for you.

We do not breed from birds that are sick or have ever been sick.

We do not medicate our chickens or use pesticides on them or their environment.

We do not breed from pullets. All our hens are mature and tested.

We do not expose our flock to artificial lighting to induce early laying.

For the health and wellbeing of our birds and their offspring, we do not hatch out-of-season.

We do not confine our breeding groups to small pens. They free range all day, every day, year round.

We are not an egg mill supplying an extensive catalogue of breeds. We are intentionally small-scale, focussed on excellence within a select few bloodlines.

As of the 2026 breeding season, we utilise DNA testing for the blue egg gene and recessive white.

We always conduct test hatches before releasing eggs. Fertility does not equate to embryo viability or to hatchability.

For the harmony of the flock, we do not run multiple roosters through the same pen at the same time. We do cycle different roosters in and out over the course of a season, to achieve our breeding goals. You will always know the paternity of your chicks.

We recognize the role of parental nutrition in chick health.

To the extent that temperament is heritable, we do not tolerate aggressive roosters. (Plus, it takes the fun out of it.)

We do not sell our culls.
